What is Acne Scarring?

Acne scarring is the damage caused by acne. The damage to the skin could be from squeezing or picking the lesions. The skin attempts to repair these lesions by forming excessive amounts  of new collagen which form fibrous masses. These repairs aren't as smooth and flawless as the original skin thereby creating scarring.

Its important to stay out of the sun, as the sun’s rays can cause the scarring to become darker and more visible. The process for getting rid of the scars then becomes even harder.

What causes Acne Scarring?

Hypertrophic or keloid scarring:

This type of scar is when the body produces too much collagen as the acne lesions heal, resulting in a mass of raised tissue on the surface of the skin.

Atrophic or depressed scarring:

This type of scar is when there is a decrease of tissue. There are two types of atrophic scarring.

The "Icepick" scar which are usually small, obvious holes in the skin.

The "Boxcar" scars which are usually depressed areas, usually round or oval in shape. Boxcar scars can look very similar to chickenpox scars.

There are products and skin treatments, some non-surgical which can improve the depth, pigmentation and appearance of acne scars.
