Microneedling

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy. As the name says it is a treatment that induces new collagen production.

Aging and so many different environmental effects can cause sallow, scarred, uneven skin, wrinkles and loss of collagen.

Microneedling is used to improve skin texture and firmness, as well as reduction in surface scarring and fine wrinkles.

It is involves the use of a device that contains fine needles. The needles create small puncture wounds in the skin which stimulates the skin’s natural ability to heal itself and in the process produces collagen and elastin.

The main purpose of this very popular and innovative treatment is to generate more collagen, which is crucial on your journey to firmer, smoother and even skin. Hand-held devices such as the Dermapen or Dermaroller is used.

Microneedling can be used for face, neck, décolleté and arms, and it may need to be repeated a few times to obtain the best results.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY MICRONEEDLING PROCEDURE?

Your therapist will prep your skin by applying a numbing cream first and then bring out the Dermaroller or Dermapen. These devices have the finest needles which poke fine holes into the skin. In the case of the Dermaroller, the device is  rolled across the surface of your face, to stimulate the collagen, filling in fine lines, wrinkles and plumping the skin. A Dermapen on the other hand vertically penetrates the skin, but doing the same job. The Dermapen is also slimmer in design to get to all the hard to reach parts of your face.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MY MICRONEEDLING PROCEDURE?

Your skin will appear red after, similar to a sunburn. But don’t worry, after a few hours the red will turn to a pink tinge, that may last up to 48 hours. Peeling will occur after a few days. Try very hard not to pick or scratch the treated skin, rather keep it moisturised. Be very gentle when washing your face too. Use your hands and a gentle cleanser and do avoid the sun for a few days. But remember to always take the expert advice from your therapist or dermatologist on how to care for your skin before and after your treatment. They will also advise you on the best gentle cleansers and moisturisers to use after.

IS THE MICRONEEDLING PROCEDURE PAINFUL?

If you have a phobia for needles, this is might not be a treatment you’ll dash out to get. But rest assured, a numbing cream is applied before. However there will be a tingling and pinching sensation when the Dermapen or Dermaroller pokes the skin’s surface.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO MICRONEEDLING?

If you only have a minor skin condition like very fine lines and wrinkles or minor scars you can go for the treatment every 2-4 weeks. For major skin conditions, it is advised to go every 4-6 weeks. Your therapist or dermatologist will of course discuss with you when your next appointment will be.
