WHAT IS BOTOX?

With all the amazing new treatments to combat wrinkles and fine lines hitting our social media pages and all aesthetic clinics and spas, Botox (Botulinum toxin) is still queen of them all. Still extremely popular with the fairer sex, our male counterparts seem to have taken a liking to it. So boys, this one’s for you too. Botox is a substance injected into the skin which blocks the signal from the nerves to the muscles. The muscle will no longer contract as strongly causing the wrinkles to relax. It can be used for forehead lines, lines around the mouth, lines on the side of the nose (bunny lines), crows feet and on the chin (dimpling).

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A BOTOX SESSION?

Botox is a very simple procedure but it is always good to visit a physician for a consultation so they have a good understanding on which areas you’d like botoxed. Once you had your consultation and ready to go, the qualified physician (you want qualified when it comes to these treatments), will inject very small amounts of Botox to the areas you’d like treated. Botox can happen straight after your consultation if you are ready and feel this is the treatment for you.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER BOTOX?

Straight after your Botox session, there will be slight redness and swelling, but that will disappear after a few minutes. Some people do experience a mild headache.  There might be some minor bruising too but nothing that will last. The Botox will not kick in immediately, so don’t expect an instant change. Give it 7 days and you’ll notice that the Botox has worked its magic and you’ll see results. Your skin will appear smoother.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GO FOR BOTOX?

Usually Botox lasts for 3-4 months until you need another session. But do listen to your physician on how often you need a session. There are many factors to bear in mind like your age, skin type, skin condition and lifestyle.

Did you know some aesthetic clinics offer Botox parties for you and your friends in the comfort of your own home? What do you think? Yay, it’s so Hollywood or no thanks, Botox is me time?!
